I am a theatre maker primarily interested in connecting directly to my audience's lived experience. I am focused on bringing the story of the invisible middle-aged woman into the limelight. My first exploration of women and domesticity was during my BA - exploring the home as a potential site of transformation and my dissertation (2011) which looked at the work of Bobby Baker (most strikingly The Kitchen Show) and Adrian Howells (particularly An Audience with Adrienne). My character Lotta Quizeen was devised during my year long Masters at Brighton University (2011-2) searching for a way of exploring woman's domestic role while paying heed to the challenges of modern life, the technological revolution and the dilemmas of neo-feminism and capitalism. As writer, director and performer of Lotta's initial work Domestic Bits (2012) and Shelf Life (2013) I have tried to layer my work - using the concept of a 'mock mock autobiography' creating a representation of of a fantasy self (Lotta) within an already constructed autobiographical frame (myself 'playing the role' of representational wife). Through this I seek to delve into the history of feminism and explore our present day shared anxieties and concepts of failure through the private/public paradoxical world that we all have to inhabit. I seek to put pressure on the theatrical 'fourth wall' forcing my audience to question the 'reality' of my character, drawing my audience in to the liminal space between performance and reality.
